Hi Colette, costo chondritis presents itself as severe pain in the chest, either left OR right, restricting movement, breathing, coughing, sneezing. Chondrotin is a substance found in bone and cartilage and it appears that this substance is prone to infection. Experts are of the opinion that this condition is mainly found in women (2:1), but it actually seems to spread across ALL age groups! It is normally treated by taking pain killers and a pretty broad spectrum antibiotic to prevent possible respiratory tract infections, thus minimilizing the symptoms and effects of, for eg, a common cold or influenza for obvious reasons. Added to this, a good anti-inflammatory drug seems to alleviate the pain and symptoms. I've had this for three weeks now, and the pain seems less, although the discomfort is acute and agonizingly painful!Certain articles suggest that the condition is recurrent, but I have yet to experience this. In the meantime, during the initial period of diagnosis, bed rest and medication is just about the only treatment, with the emphasis on bed rest, keeping still and hoping you have no reason to cough or sneeze! Take care - I hope this helps in answering your question.
