Unwelcomed Erection

I had to go to my local hospital yesterday for an ultra sound scan on my scrotum & testes. The doctor who performed the scan was a pleasent elderly gentleman. During the exam is was asked to pull down my pants, lie on the bench and pull my penis up tight towards my chest. He put on the lubricant and started the examination. He examined my left testicle and then my right one, back and forth. This seemed to go on forever. I tried my best, but towards the end of the exam I got an erection and worst of all I had to clean the lubricant off afterwards with him present. I felt very embarassed. Is it normal for men to get erections during this type of exam?
