I don't know if gallstones alone can cause severe pain but I had my gall bladder taken out in Feb 99 and was hospitalized a dozen or more times in the 2 years following. My pain was very severe and was not sharp but dull in my upper abdomen and went through to my back. It would occasionally cause shaking, nausea and I would immediately get flushed and turn white. I almost thought at times I could be having a heart attack. I have had cat scans, mri's, ercp's and lots of blood drawn and none of the tests showed anything. I was beginning to think it was all in my head until they finally sent me to a Boston hospital for another Ercp. The doctor there found a gall stone immediately that was lodged in my common bile duct. Unfortunately, I am still continuing to have the same pain, just not as severe or frequent. I am going back to Boston again in hopes there might be another stone, although they say thats highly unlikely, anyway, I would definately say thay gall stones can cause severe pain among other problems. Usually the stones pass but if they don't then get it removed so that it does not complicate the functions of your other organs. I also sometimes think that mabey the pain I feel now could be a form of an ulcer or some type of stomach irritation since when I drink milk or water it seems to subside but it does seem to be the same exaxt pain as before which was due to a stone so I can't be too sure. The whole digetive system is very confusing and the pains are so much alike. Oh and they did put me on all those stomache medications too and I thought sometimes mabey it helped but the pain still comes and goes so the Dr says the med's don't have anything to do with. I have not heard of anything you can do to prevent the pain but they do recommend a low fat diet, exercise, no smoking or alcohol. Good luck and I hope you find what it is.
