Ultraviolet radiation is the high-energy rays coming from the sun. Artificial sources such as tanning booths and sunlamps also produce ultraviolet radiation. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and from sunlamps and tanning booths damages the skin and can lead to melanoma and other types of skin cancer. Awareness about tanning booths is not there as exposure to bulbs in tanning booths is touted as relatively lighter over a particular time. I kinda believe otherwise. Intensity of exposure seem high considering short time people spend in tanning booths to get tan fast . Only way to prevent adverse impact is to reduce exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which decreases the incidence of nonmelanoma skin cancer. Reducing exposure to the sun, wearing protective clothing such as a hat and long sleeves, and using adequate amounts of sunscreen can help lower your risk of skin cancer. Sunscreens are rated in strength according to a sun protection factor (SPF). The higher the SPF, the more sunburn protection is provided. Sunscreens with an SPF value of 2 to 11 provide minimal protection against sunburns. Sunscreens with an SPF of 12 to 29 provide moderate protection. Those with an SPF of 30 or higher provide high protection against sunburn. Sunglasses that have UV-absorbing lenses should also be worn. The label should specify that the lenses block at least 99% of UVA and UVB radiation. However, it is not known if avoiding sunburns reduces a person's chance of developing melanoma skin cancer. Nonmelanoma skin cancer is the most common form of skin cancer. There are about 1.3 million cases each year in the United States. Basal cell carcinoma (80%) and squamous cell carcinoma (16%) are the most common forms of nonmelanoma skin cancers, accounting for about 96% of all new cases of skin cancer. Even though Melanoma is the least common, but is most aggressive of the two types of skin cancer. Melanoma originates in melanocytes-the cells in the skin that produce pigment or melanin. Over hundred thousand new cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the United States every year. That amounts to about 4% of all diagnosed skin cancers but it accounts for about 77% of skin cancer deaths. I hope this information helps
