This sounds to me like maybe a strained muscle along with some possible anxiety? If it scared her to tears then I would bet she has a little anxiety and the more she worried about it the more it hurt. I have spent hours upon hours of researching when I was hurting, and I found that most of the time if something serious is casuing your ribs to be sore its under you right side not left.
